Which Chair lift is Right For Your Stairs?

There is a wide range of stair chairs to choose from & they all have various different features, options & weight limits of the user to think about. But there are really only three main types: These are the Straight Stairlift, the Curved Stairlift & the Platform stair lift. All these have versions that can be used both indoor or outdoors, for instance for use in the garden or to get from a parking area up to the house. Another common option is for a power seat which features an automatic battery powered swivel chair which automatically swivels when the user is at the top or the bottom of the stairs to make exiting the lift area safer and does away with the need for the user or carer to bend down to swivel their weight manually on the chair.

Straight stair lifts: The commonest installation. They are the simplest to use & also the quickest to install. You would choose a straight lift when you need to move from one floor to the next & back again up a straight run of stairs. We install more straight stairlifts than other types because they are the commonest type of stairs and also with a quick and easy installation approx 45 mins and also being surprisingly affordable especially if you were to opt for a reconditioned or ex-demo model.

Curved stair lifts: These lifts are often chosen when you need to move down or up a spiral staircase, or one with a bend, and can be placed on the inside or outside of the bends & landings. The curved stairlift would be the appropriate choice for use on staircases over several floors as it would negotiate the curves around from one staircase along the landing and then onto the next staircase in safety. The one flight of stairs curved lift typically takes a half day for full installation & the prices depend on the situation and layout, but usually more expensive than a standard straight lift because of the extra work in designing the rail to fit the different angles and gradient of your curved staircase.

Perch stair lifts: A nice option for you if you can't bend your knees or hips this lift can also be used for extra narrow staircases as the seat width has a smaller footprint being of a perch stool design.

Curved stairlifts economic alternative: A bridging platform.

Why is a chair lift in general more popular now?

A lot of families are finding that helping their relatives with their healthcare needs becomes more complex when we talk about the challenge our ageing population presents. When our elderly friends or family members begin to visit the doctors with multiple conditions it can be a concern that affects others around them. What this means is that there may be more than one condition such as angina, diabetes, arthritis, dementia or obesity for example that might be some of the conditions that are present for them. Although caring for an ageing loved one and balancing the demands in your own life can be very stressful and also tiring, if you can get help when it's available then all the better.

For people who are very frail or haven't always got the capacity to make decisions it's best to create a health care proxy. You must decide who their mother or father will be happy with as their health care proxy or advocate decision maker. This is someone who can be relied upon to reflect the elderly persons best interests and will be their guide through health care, giving them a chance to make decisions about care when needed and also to take the lead on certain things if the person doesn't understand.

For less ill people they may be able to live independently with a little help from the many mobility products like scooters, electric wheelchairs, electric adjustable beds through to help around the kitchen with items like jar openers. Assistive devices like speech aids, reading magnifiers or hearing aids can all help a person to live that little bit more independently and make life easier for family and safer for the user.

Amendments to the living environment in the form of ramps, stair lifts or wheelchair platform solutions can improve an individuals physical accessibility and therefore help to ease caregiver burden. Winter season is trying for anyone in colder climates, but for those of us caring for the elderly, it's a time to be wary as the colder weather poses a higher risk of health and safety challenges to the ageing population. Slips, trips and falls on icy surfaces are more likely at this time and also exposure to viruses like the common cold, influenza or even pneumonia are all things to watch out for. In fact, all seasons will represent possible dangers, as there are many cases of older people dying in summer heat waves.

Assisted living complexes also called extracare or retirement villages accommodate a large proportion of the elderly population nowadays, and the ageing population is still a concern that the state has no easy means to take care of. The later years of ageing can be a difficult phase of life for both elderly parents and their children, but with the right information, free advice and assistance can go a long way to making this time more manageable and see that ageing is a natural and inevitable part of life. With a little help from assistive devices like a stairlift, many families can continue to visit their parents, who can regain independence in their own homes again, rather than see them lose it to enter a residential home when they are still capable of managing things themselves. Give us a call to contact our experienced and understanding staff who know how to help because they have experienced the same situation themselves.
